Overview
Vision
Our department will imbibe, create, disseminate and apply latest clinical skills and expansion of knowledge to minimise the burden of respiratory diseases in the public there by creating healthier society. We are taking necessary steps along with the National Tuberculosis Elimination program to eradicate tuberculosis from our country.
Mission
To prevent and manage all kind of pulmonary diseases by providing adequate best treatment along with the integration of innovative patient care. We excel academic activities to the medical students with translational research process to upgrade the department.
Programme Specific Outcomes
At the end of the course of Pulmonary Medicine the Under Graduate student shall be able to:
- Demonstrate sound knowledge of common chest diseases, their clinical manifestations, including emergent situations and of investigative procedures to confirm their diagnosis.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of various modes of therapy used in treatment of respiratory diseases.
- Describe the mode of action of commonly used drugs, their doses, side-effect/toxicity, indications, contra-indications and interactions.
- Describe commonly used modes of management including medical procedures available for treatment of various diseases.
- Perform simple, routine investigative and office procedures required for making the bed side diagnosis, especially sputum collection and examination for etiologic organisms especially Acid Fast Bacilli (AFB), interpretation of the chest X-ray and Pulmonary function test.
- Assist in the performance of common procedures, like pleural aspiration, pneumo-thoracic drainage/ aspiration.

- Separate outpatient rooms for male and female patients
- Inpatient male and female ward with isolation for sputum positive tuberculosis cases with 50 beds.
- Respiratory ICU with Invasive and Non-invasive Ventilators
- Demonstration room /seminar room
- Department library with an extensive collection of Journals.
- Clinical laboratory with microscope for sputum evaluation
- Video bronchoscopy suite with a well trained staff
- Portable jet nebulisers are also available in the outpatient along with the ward nebulisers.
- Computerised Spirometer with a printer, for evaluation of lung function
- Facilities for pleural biopsy, intercostal drainage and thoracocentesis
- Lobbies for X-Rays and CT-Scan reading

UNDER GRADUATION:

- Able to identify pulmonary tuberculosis suspects.
- Aware of common interventions in Respiratory Medicine
CRRI:
CRRI’s are trained in diagnosing and managing the common Respiratory disorders and to handle the emergencies during their 1 week posting.

PATIENT EDUCATION (AWARENESS PROGRAMME):
This centre aims at improving the quality of life in COPD/Bronchial Asthma patients. These patients are taught proper technique of using inhalers and breathing exercises. Patients are educated about the hazards of smoking, tobacco use and smoking cessation awareness created among patients. Also tuberculosis patients are routinely counselled regarding the condition, need for completion of treatment and regular follow-up.
The department periodically conducts patient education on following days.

- World COPD day – 3rd Wednesday of November
