A 45 year old lady, hailing from Puducherry, had visited several hospitals for abdominal pain after suffering a heart attack two months ago during this corona pandemic period. She was admitted at Sri Venkateshwaraa Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Ariyur, Puducherry and subsequently diagnosed to have large ovarian tumor.
Cardiologist Dr. Baskaran.S has conducted a cardiac evaluation and found that she has markedly reduced functioning of the heart (Ejection Fraction – 30%) due to the very recent heart attack. He had opined that she had a very high risk for any surgical procedure and advised the necessary measures to prevent cardiac related complications during the surgery. After explaining the patient and the relatives, the 5 hours surgery was performed by the surgical team comprised of Surgical Oncologist Dr. Ravisankar Palaniappan, Dr.Aroun Kumar.N, Dr. Jeevan, Dr. Haripriya led by anesthetist team Prof. & HOD Dr.Raghuraman, Prof. Dr. Radhakrishnan, Dr. Surya Ratnasamy, and Dr. Rajesh. The challenging and complicated surgery was performed and 5 kg of large ovarian tumor was removed along with the cancer staging procedure. The patient was discharged after 5 days with complete recovery.
The complex surgery in these type of heart disease patients are very challenging particularly during this corona pandemic and it was successfully performed with team work of multiple specialties. Sri Venkateshwaraa Medical College Hospital Chairman Sri.B.Ramachandhran, Dean Prof.S.Ratnasamy, Dean Research & PG Studies Prof.S.Mahadevan, Medical Superintendent Dr.Muralitharan congratulated the entire medical team who performed such a challenging operation. Many such cancer patients requiring complex procedures have undergone treatment in our institute under the Surgical Oncology Department headed by Dr.Ravisankar.P prior to this for quite a long time.
