There is regular communication with the patients and care givers using digital platforms and telemedicine to improve the adherence and follow-up. We also use digital means to create and disseminate information about the illnesses and its prognosis both to the patients and the general population.
The Department of Psychiatry has a state of art facilities for treatments like electroconvulsive therapy and bio feedback. Specific care has been taken for safety and to safeguard the confidentiality of the patients.

Undergraduate:
Ability to recognize and manage common psychological and psychiatric disorders in a tertiary care setting, institute preliminary treatment in disorders difficult to manage, and refer appropriately
Ability to assess risk for suicide and refer appropriately and take steps to prevent it.

Postgraduate
At the end of the MD course in Psychiatry, the postgraduate should be able to understand the relevance of mental health in relation to the health needs of the country.
Ethical considerations in the teaching, research & practice of psychiatry.
Take detailed history, conduct appropriate ethically valid physical examination and institute appropriate evaluation procedures to make a correct clinical diagnosis.
Identify the social, economic, biological, emotional and environmental determinants of mental health
Institute appropriate diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative procedures to the mentally ill patient. Recommend appropriate laboratory and imaging examinations and interpret the results correctly
Plan and deliver comprehensive treatment of a psychiatric patient using principles of rational drug therapy based on most recent clinical guidelines and rehabilitation of psychiatric patient suffering from chronic illness.
Clinically manage psychiatric emergencies efficiently.
Demonstrate empathy and humane approach towards patients and their families and respect their sensibilities.
Demonstrate communication skills of a high order in explaining management and prognosis, providing counselling and giving health education messages to patients, families and communities.
To develop skills in implementation of national mental health programs, effectively and responsibly, also to practice evidence-based psychiatry.

The student should know the basic concepts of research methodology and plan a research project in accordance with ethical principles. She/He should also be able to interpret research findings and apply these in clinical practice. She/He should know how to access and utilize information resources and should have basic knowledge of statistics.
She/He should learn the basic methodology of teaching and develop competence in teaching medical/paramedical students, health professionals, members of allied disciplines (e.g. behavioural sciences), law enforcement agencies, families and consumers and members of the public.

Programs offered
MD Psychiatry
A 3 year post graduate course affiliated to Pondicherry University (Central University) is recognized by medical council of India.
Undergraduate Training
It includes theory classes, clinical classes and didactic lectures based on the syllabus prescribed by the MCI. The didactic lectures are scheduled as per MCI and Pondicherry University norms, Internal assessment have been conducted periodically.
Postgraduate Training
Bedside Teaching, Seminar, Group Discussion, Journal Club, Case Conference, Symposium are conducted regularly as per the curriculum recommended by the Medical council of India & Pondicherry University using state of art audio visual aids
All sessions are supervised by faculty members. It is mandatory for all postgraduates to attend the sessions. All the teaching sessions are assessed by the faculty members and the peers at the end of the session.
Postgraduate are encouraged to actively discuss and clarify their doubts
Training in Clinical Psychology is given by the clinical psychologist. Psychological testing, assessments and psychotherapies are taught.
Internal Assessment based on university pattern is conducted every three months which are assessed by faculty members
PG’s are deputed for subspecialties training at NIMHANS which includes child psychiatry, De-addiction and Psychiatric rehabilitation. They are also posted in Neurology and General medicine.

Barath.R 2nd Year PG Guided by Dr.C.P Rabindranath won Best Poster Award on “Carbamazepine induced Pemphigus Vulgaris” held at Venkateshwaraa medical and Research institute, Puducherry on 6th October 2019.
