Surgical Oncology

Overview

The Surgical Oncology department was started in the year 2017. The department has been instrumental in providing dedicated cancer care to the needy patients. We treat all the cancer patients and perform complex oncological surgeries including advanced laparoscopic, thoracoscopic cancer surgeries, Hepato pancreatico-biliary surgeries, Gastrointestinal malignancies, complex head & neck cancers, musculoskeletal cancers, breast and endocrine cancers, gynaecological cancers, urologic malignancies and oncological reconstructive procedures including breast oncoplastic surgeries. 

The Department is led by well experienced oncologist for ethical and quality care. The department has performed hundreds of complex oncological surgeries in the last few years, with the mission of serving cancer patients and subsequently for a oncological outcome and improved quality of life in comparable to the leading oncological centres around the world. The department also provides rehabilitation of these patients occupationally, psychologically and physically.

Vision

To establish full fledged department and to improve the department of Surgical Oncology. To provide comprehensive surgical oncology care and multimodality treatment. To develop the department as one of the most preferred centre for cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Mission

We provide dedicated cancer care to all the people of Puducherry and nearby districts of Tamilnadu. The department involves in creating cancer awareness to the community through rural camps and health education, for primary prevention and early detection of cancer.

Programme Specific Outcomes

Performed two left hepatectomies first of its kind, in the private colleges in Puducherry.

Have performed more than 15 commando procedures in the last 15 months

Performed Laryngopharygo-esophagetomy, first of its kind in the private Medical Colleges in Puducherry.

Transthoracic Esophagectomy has also been performed

Awards
Dr K Muralidharan, Post Graduate Department of General Surgery on behalf of Surgical oncology department presented a poster on HIBERNOMA in International Health Research Convention (IHRC) 2019 and was awarded the FIRST place.

1) Halsted’s Oncology Quiz on 26.09.2019 for the Undergraduate students

 2) CME on Gloves on 06.10.2019 for the medical and paramedical staffs.

3) Breast cancer screening camp was done in view of World Cancer Day.

Highlights

With reverence, It gives immense delectation and exuldation to share our small subdued milestone from the Department of Surgical Oncology. We have moved on from open surgeries to start advanced oncological laparoscopic surgeries. The anesthesia team led by venerated professor Dr. Krishna Prabhu, Dr. Suganya and others, and surgical team mentored by adorable Professor Dr. Selvakumar, and team included Dr. Appumathi, Postgraduates Dr. Sanjay, Dr. Priyanka and myself successfully performed Laparascopic Ultra Low Anterior ResectionResection for carcinoma rectum post neoadjuvant treatment. The procedure took 6 hours in total and it is one of the moment to treasure. The patient recovered well and got discharged.
